Last week, I spent my first day in the hospital as a student nurse. While the rest of my clinical group practiced their skills on the Ortho floor, I was gallivanting around the surgical unit. I finally found the operating room experience student nurse essay to my life long question — will I vomit when I see blood and guts out in the open.

The OR operating room will probably not live up to your ideas about surgery. If you, like me, thought you were going to see a huge dedicated space with a massive viewing window — prepare to be disappointed. This is not New Amsterdam.

The surgical floor can operating room experience student nurse essay numerous operating rooms in them. I spent the day in OR 5, and there were many more after that number. The room was about 15×15 with one central surgical table.

You can use your phone, operating room experience student nurse essay, and sometimes the surgeons turn on their favorite jams. Do not be the person that breaks the field of an entire table of equipment. When I arrived on the surgical floor, operating room experience student nurse essay, I wandered around like a lost puppy. The person I needed to report to was late, so I stood at the info desk looking terrified and confused. Finally, a nice surgical tech told me I could go ahead and change into my OR scrubs.

When you go to the OR, you will change out of your scrubs and put on THEIR scrubs. You just do it. About an hour later, I was finally given my marching orders of the day. The Charge nurse was cool and asked me what I wanted to see. I told him a little of everything, so he put me in a room with lots of different surgeries scheduled. My first surgery at was an amputation below the knee. It was a very old diabetic woman whose foot was necrotic black, dead, rotting, operating room experience student nurse essay.

I was a little freaked out, but ready for the challenge. Bring on the saw! Most of the time, it took the surgical techs and nurses longer to prep the sterile equipment and operating room than it took the surgeon to perform the surgery. This amputation took all of 20 minutes. First, the anesthesiologist will knock the patient out with a mixture of drugs. This patient was sedated prior because she was in pain. Then they will intubate the patient.

Read about intubation here. In this situation, they keep the tooth and explain the situation to the family or guardian after surgery.

It also got some laughs around the room, because how can you not? This is to reduce errors such as amputating the wrong limb. First, they push all the blood from the bottom of the limb up to the top of the limb, and then they tourniquet it off to cut the blood supply. There was very little blood in the surgery. After the limb is removed, they use a laser looking burner to close off the veins and arteries — kind of like when you burn the fray off of a string with a lighter.

Then they pull the leftover skin up around the lower part of the knee and sew it up. Easy peasy lemon squeezy! The most exciting part of the amputation for me?

They cut the leg off and set operating room experience student nurse essay next to me on the table so I could simply observe the dead foot for an extended period of time. It was wrapped up and taken to the lab for testing afterwards. To all the moms out there — have you heard of this? It helps prevent early delivery and late-term miscarriage, operating room experience student nurse essay.

This procedure was WAY bloodier than the amputation. Also note — the woman was awake for the whole procedure. They numb you from the waist down! I went from an elderly diabetic to a pregnant woman to a toddler needing tubes and adenoid removal.

This procedure is super simple and clean, but the doctor was kinda a downer. She was the only one who made all the nurses and techs uptight. The environment and tone in the room was not fun. I also creepily watched a shoulder surgery through the window of the OR next to me, and that was insane! They were doing laparoscopy and it was like watching a movie. He was burning off scar tissue and bone. It was crazy. You will be manhandled in surgery.

Finally, I watched the beginning of a double tibial surgery of a middle-aged homeless man alcoholic, Hep C positive. Those doctors were fun! They had their music on and were jamming out. They also tried to include me where they could and showed me what joint fluid looked like.

It was a good time. Unfortunately, I had to leave early and head back to my clinical group. What had me mulling all evening? This was a perfect example of things you begin to learn upon working in a medical environment. Nurses are taught to give holistic care and treat the whole person — mind, body, and soul. When I asked where this man would go after his surgery — as he will need MAJOR rehab and has nowhere to live — the docs stated that they just perform the surgeries, operating room experience student nurse essay.

It was an awesome day. I learned a lot and found myself critically thinking several times. Kudos to all those working in surgery! You are awesome! Liz is currently a nurse in the United States Air Force. When not working, she spends her days reading, baking, and going on adventures with her operating room experience student nurse essay, Motley Crue. Wow, how cool!

I always thought I would love to observe surgeries and thanks for giving me a window into it. How sad about that alcoholic guy. It did open my eyes to so many things, and of course, the movies get it wrong mostly. I really had no idea what I was walking into. There were some real highs and lows in the day. So who knows?! I once passed out watching Dragon Gal give blood, so I could never stomach watching any surgery.

No vomit! Okay, just thinking about the amputation let alone the necrotic limb made me queasy. I surprised myself a bit with the amputation. I expected to get queasy. Proud of myself on that. Thanks for commenting! I love this post. I am currently a pre-nurse with hopes of becoming an Airforce nurse. I really love your blog. Im so excited to start nursing school. I know Dragon Guy already commented but I want to add my two cents.

What an intense experience!!!!!!!!!! So fascinating to read about the various surgeries and how each OR room vibe felt so different. We Dragons admire nurses SO much! Dragon Gal.
